Whitewater Kayak Camp I: Intro

Whitewater Kayak Camp I: Intro is a full day camp that will introduce your child to whitewater kayaking in a comfortable, fun, and encouraging environment. Working with our experienced instructors throughout the week campers will learn how to competently paddle class II whitewater while also learning how to work together as a group on the river. After spending the week learning to paddle at the Whitewater Center on Friday campers have the opportunity to apply their skill on the Lower Green River in Western NC. Instructor Ratio: 4 students to 1 instructor

Skill prerequisites: Must be comfortable swimming

Ages: 10 – 18

Spring/Fall Camp: Intro

Introduction Spring/Fall Camp initiates kids to whitewater kayaking in a comfortable and encouraging environment. Over the course of three Saturdays campers will learn the basics of whitewater kayaking while becoming competent on our Instruction Channel. Our Spring and Fall Kayak Camps are a great supplement or precursor to Summer Kayak Camp so your child can keep learning all season long.

Instructor ratio: 4 students to 1 instructor

Skill prerequisites: Must be comfortable swimming

Duration: 3 Saturdays, 1pm – 5pm

Youth Development Sessions

Youth development sessions are the ideal way to help foster long term paddler development. After learning the basics in one of our Kayak Camps these ongoing weekly group sessions provide a fun, relaxed, and engaging atmosphere for young paddlers to improve while meeting other paddlers their age. These sessions are independent weekly classes that students can choose to sign up for each week. The content for each week’s session is based on the students that are enrolled, tailoring the skills and techniques to their needs providing a consistently engaging experience that is student-centered. Previous whitewater kayaking experience is required to participate in Youth Development sessions.

Instructor ratio: 4 students to 1 instructor

Skill prerequisites: Must have completed an Intro Camp (Summer or Spring/Fall), or have experience paddling class II whitewater and rolling

Ages: 10 – 18

Duration: Saturdays, 10:30am – 12:30pm (2 hours)

Spring/Fall Camp: Development

Development Spring/Fall Camp expands the knowledge and skills of kids who have already learned the basics of whitewater kayaking. Over the course of three Saturdays, campers will learn new skills and experience new rapids while honing the skills they already possess. Our Spring and Fall Development Camps are a great supplement or precursor to Summer Development Kayak Camp so your child can keep learning all season long.

Skill prerequisites: Must have completed an Intro Camp (Summer or Spring/Fall), or have experience paddling class II whitewater and rolling

Ages: 10 – 18

Duration: 3 Saturdays, 1pm – 5pm

Whitewater Kayak Camp II: Development

Whitewater Kayak Camp II: Development is a full day camp designed to further develop the skills learned in either Spring, Summer, or Fall Kayak Camp. Each day campers will be presented with new challenges as they learn to independently navigate the river under the guidance of our instructors. After spending the week learning to paddle at the USNWC campers will have the opportunity to apply their new skills on the Upper or Lower Green River during our optional off-site trip day. Skill prerequisites: Must have completed Rock, Ride, and Paddle Camp I or Intro Camp (Summer or Spring/Fall), or have experience paddling class II whitewater and rolling

Ages: 10 – 18

Duration: 5 full days

Spring/Fall Camp: Advanced

Advanced Spring/Fall Kayak Camps are designed to rapidly develop the skills of campers who already have a reliable roll. Over the course of three Saturdays, campers will learn elements of teamwork as they advance their skills in the areas of river-running, freestyle, river rescue, and basic slalom. Our Advanced Spring and Fall Kayak Camps are a great supplement or precursor to Advanced Kayak Camp so your child can keep learning all season long.

Instructor ratio: 4 students to 1 instructor

Skill prerequisites: Must have completed Spring/Fall or Summer Development Camp or have experience paddling class III whitewater;  must have a reliable combat roll (minimum 8 successful rolls in 10 attempts in whitewater)

Ages: 10 – 18

Duration: 3 consecutive Saturdays, 1pm – 5pm (4 hours each)

Youth Advanced Development Sessions

Youth Advanced Sessions are weekly sessions focusing on a specific topic appropriate for youth paddlers who already have a reliable roll. These ongoing weekly group sessions provide a fun and engaging atmosphere for young paddlers to improve in the areas of freestyle, slalom, and river running. These sessions serve as a great supplement to our Advanced Spring/Fall and Summer Camps.

Instructor ratio: 4 students to 1 instructor

Skill prerequisites: Must have completed Spring/Fall or Summer Development Camp or have experience paddling class III whitewater; must have a reliable combat roll (minimum 8 successful rolls in 10 attempts in whitewater)

Ages: 10 – 18

Duration: Saturdays, 10:30am – 12:30pm (2 hours)

Whitewater Kayak Camp III: Advanced

Whitewater Kayak Camp III: Advanced is a full day camp experience that will fine tune your camper’s kayaking skills while challenging them to develop more advanced techniques at an accelerated pace. These skills, maneuvers, and river knowledge will allow them to enhance their whitewater paddling experience by opening up fun new ways to enjoy a variety of rivers. Advanced Whitewater Kayak Campers will also learn rescue techniques that will serve to help keep themselves and others safe on the river. At the end of the week campers will have the opportunity to apply their skills on a classic NC river. More information on Summer Camps can be found here.
