Basic Raft Maneuvers

Does your Department own a raft?  Has your Department been trained on how to use your raft in fast moving current?  Let the professional guides at the U.S. National Whitewater Center train your staff to become top notch boat handlers. 

Basic Paddle Raft Maneuvers  

This course teaches basic guide paddle strokes, recognition and avoidance of common river hazards, paddle commands, ferrying, eddy hoping, and raft recovery upon a flip.  Students should feel confident in guiding Class II whitewater by the end of the 2 day course.  Students will also get the chance to guide on Class III whitewater. 


EXPERIENCE LEVEL
Beginner - Intermediate

PREREQUISITE
Basic swimming ability
Good physical condition

MINIMUM AGE

18

DURATION
2 days (16 - 18 hrs)

GEAR REQUIREMENTS
Dress appropriately for weather (Drysuit/Wetsuit)
Helmet (lightweight water or kayak helmet)
PFD (USCG Type III or V)
Shoes (thick-soled water booties or tennis shoes)
