Outdoor Leadership School Leader

Title: USNWC Outdoor Leadership School Leader
Reports to: Outdoor School Manager

Summary of Position:
USNWC OLS Leaders are responsible for working with youth, teens, and adults while sharing their passion for the outdoors. OLS leaders serve in multiple capacities including leading, teaching, being a friend, fellow participant, and a role model to USNWC students. Possessing strong backcountry skills and knowledge, community service experience and a devotion to working with youth and teens leads to the success of this program. OLS Leader positions are seasonal.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsibility for a group of 10-12 students, 24 hours a day, for periods up to 15days.
  • Ensure quality supervision and safety for each student
  • Address medical concerns
  • Organize gear needs and perform logistical support
  • Be able to fully understand and present teaching topics to the students


  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • Prior experience working with youth, teenagers, and adults one on one and in group dynamics
  • Background experience and knowledge in backpacking on multi-day excursions, whitewater canoeing, rock climbing, wilderness first aid, wilderness survival, and teaching
  • Certifications: Wilderness First Responder + CPR or WEMT + CPR
  • Safety-oriented, patient, organized, enthusiastic, and flexible
  • Able to communicate clearly with all participants
  • Excellent driving record with no major infractions of unsafe conduct. Position requires driving a 15 passenger van while towing a utility trailer varying in size.
  • Must be able to swim
  • Must be able to carry a 60lb. backpack on varying terrain for multiple days
  • Extensive whitewater paddling experience preferred (raft, kayak, and/or open canoe).
